Remote Sensing
We at R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc.
routinely employ magnetic gradient, earth conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility
studies at both prehistoric and historic sites.
Geophysical remote sensing survey during archeological
investigations can provide a quick, non-intrusive means of gaining information
about cultural resources. We at R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates,
Inc. routinely employ magnetic gradient, earth conductivity, and magnetic
susceptibility studies at both prehistoric and historic sites. These surveys
are undertaken quickly and effectively with a Geonics
Limited EM-38B Ground Conductivity Meter and a Geometrics
G-858 Cesium Gradiometer. In cases where additional information
is needed, other geophysical techniques (such as Ground Penetrating Radar)
can be employed to gain a further understanding of the site without impacting
the integrity of the archeological resource. We can provide a full range
of nautical remote sensing services such as, sidescan sonar, magnetometer
and deep bottom profilier. Our equipment includes high
resolution side scan sonar, proton precision magnetometer, and
digital sub-bottom profiler.
Geophysical remote sensing surveys are one of the areas
where Goodwin & Associates is helping to shape future research in
archeological Phase I identification, Phase II evaluation, and Phase III
data recovery investigations throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and
Southeast United States. The application of these non-intrusive geophysical
techniques to archeological undertakings has helped us with the identification
of features, the delineation of site/cemetery boundaries, and the recognition
of internal site patterning.
Routine application of geophysics on the Phase I identification
level can be particularly helpful in the search for features and human
burials at prehistoric and historic cemeteries. This initial, non-intrusive
survey method does not impact the human burials and provides us with valuable
information to help our clients plan either avoidance or excavation strategies.
GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
Our experienced team of GIS professionals work in a
variety of software packages to deliver reliable and comprehensive results
for a variety of planning and compliance needs.
The GIS department at Goodwin and Associates is on the
cutting edge of technology in the Cultural Resource Management field.
Working with various software packages allows for studies like viewshed
analysis, shaded relief maps, archaeological survey mapping, overlaying
data, analysis of DEMs, and predictive modeling to be conducted. We are
capable of importing, exporting, interpreting, and geo-referencing a variety
of different vector and raster data types from DWG to SHP, MR. SID to
JPEG. When trying to fully comprehend all of the factors that influence
urban planning or site mapping GIS is an invaluable tool. Besides importing,
exporting, and accurately depicting geographic data GIS is useful for
visualization. Predictive modeling is a newer type of analysis that is
gaining more and more acceptance within the field of Archaeology and Cultural
Resource Management.
Our GIS department also has the ability to interpret
engineering survey maps and data, making a collaborated effort that results
in a comprehensive final product. We can save our clients time, money
and energy.
Interactive Applications
Our multimedia and design studio is based upon a variety
of authoring packages and programming languages, so that we are able to
create custom interactive software for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh
based computer systems.
The Interactive/Interpretive Design program at R. Christopher
Goodwin & Associates, Inc. is one of a kind. Using the latest technology,
Goodwin Interactive has developed a unique program that allows us to produce
cutting-edge, studio-quality print, exhibit, and new media products. Over
the past several years, our graphics facility has been greatly expanded
to include imaging, visualization, 3D, and multimedia authoring. We use
3D design to represent the past, and animation to bring it to life. We
break the mold of classic print design to develop products that challenge
and excite the viewer. Digital imaging no longer is limited to static
images, and our graphics facility has been augmented with a full digital
editing suite.
But, this is not just about flash and show; data and
concepts are central to our projects. Let us transform your project presentation
from esoteric research results to three dimensional computer graphics
that can render complex data sets readily understandable. We are raising
the bar on client products and services.
Analytical & Conservation Services
Our firm has an archeological conservation laboratory
and personnel trained to evaluate the conservation requirements for a
variety of artifact classes.
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. offers
a full suite of laboratory analytical services. Our dedicated staff of
professionals includes faunal, lithic, prehistoric ceramic, and historic
artifact analysts. Their combined analytical skills permit levels of study
that range from basic artifact identification to lithic tool production
analysis, ceramic vessel reconstruction, and animal butchering and consumption
pattern studies. Data analysis utilizes a range of database and statistical
packages, including Microsoft AccessTM and SurferTM.
Our laboratory analysts have extensive experience with
the prehistoric material cultures of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, the
Midwest, Southwest, and the Caribbean, and with the historic material
assemblages from English, Dutch, and Spanish Colonial sites. Recent analytical
studies have included rhyolite tool production sequences in Pennsylvania
and Maryland, tobacco pipe and seventeenth century artifact analyses on
an assemblage from southern Maryland, and Pre-Columbian ceramic analysis
from Vieques, Puerto Rico.
Goodwin & Associates, Inc. also possesses an artifact
conservation laboratory, with a fume hood. We have the capability to fully
meet State curation standards established for conserved objects. Recent
conservation projects have included Colonial and early Federal coins,
jewelry, and agricultural implements, as well as the important artifact
assemblage from the Civil War period steamship Kentucky.
Public Outreach Services
We recognize the importance of communicating to the
public the role of archeology, architectural history, and history in cultural
resources management and the value of public participation.
We keep the "public" in Public Archeology.
Our in-house experts can help you reach out to the community and show
them some of the positive benefits your project has generated. We make
what appears to be esoteric historical/archeological data into tangible,
easily understandable information that will enhance the public's appreciation
of our rich historical/archeological heritage.
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. has extensive
experience in providing public interpretation services to our clients.
We have designed cultural resources exhibits for Naval facilities in Maryland,
Virginia, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico, and for the Baltimore Ravens
stadium in Maryland. These exhibits have included artifact displays and
interpretive panels, and, in one case, an interactive computer program.
We also have created educational packets for school groups. These packets
have included instruction in archeological methods, background on cultural
history, and activities for students.
We use only the very best sub-contractors to fabricate
the exhibits, and we ensure that the panels and artifact cases are constructed
of long-lasting laminated wood and plexiglass. Our public interpretation
services offer clients an opportunity to fulfill compliance responsibilities
and to enhance their relationships with surrounding communities.
