Nautical Archaeology Services: Setting the Standard
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. provides trained staff and state-of-the-art technology and equipment to advance productivity and increase safety. Our professional staff meet or exceed the Department of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines (36 CFR Part 61). The Nautical Archaeology Division anticipates and responses to customer’s needs; it seeks efficiency and implements continuous protocols to assure program safety.
Surface-Supplied Diving (SSD) Operations:
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., is an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and a corporate member of the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI). Our diving archeologists are TDI/SDI and AAUS Scientific Divers certified in the use of Surface Supplied Air, CPR/AED/First Aid-Adult, and DAN Emergency Oxygen and have worked under a variety of inland and offshore environmental conditions. We prepare a project-specific Health & Safety Plan (HaSP), which focuses on project specific risks and controls, and also provides safety risks and controls for those areas outside, but related to, the job site. Our Nautical Division practices an annual diver requalification, which simulates environmental hazards.
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., utilizes a Surface Air Supplied Diving System (Shallow Air Package, 0-60 FSW), which consists of the following basic components:
- Kirby Morgan KMAC 5 air control system; topside two-way, two-diver communications control;
- Kirby Morgan SUPERLITE® 27® and diver’s helmet;
- Kirby Morgan BANDMASK® 18
- Three-part spiral umbilical consisting of a communications cable, breathing air hose, and pneumofathometer hose;
- 80 ft³ come-home (emergency gas supply) bottles; and
- Divex Arvest Mk4 harness with Kampac backpack
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. also maintains membership in the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI) and adheres to the ADCI Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations and all applicable ADCI regulatory provisions. All operations conform to regulations put forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), pursuant to 29 CFR Part 1910, Subpart T – Commercial Diving Operations and 29 CFR Part 1910, Subpart T, App B – Guidelines for Scientific Diving. The Safe Practices / Operations Manual developed and maintained by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. ensures that we meet or exceed the highest industry standards for safety. We maintain full and appropriate USL&H and Maritime Employer’s Liability (MEL)(Jones Act) coverage and have a zero incidence rate during scientific diving operations.
